This project is the continuation of a long work between UNDP and RK Ministry of Environmental Protection, aimed at promotion of sustainable development policy and strengthening the capacity of state bodies in the most actual issues of environmental management and international cooperation.

One of the project components is support for RK MEP in strengthening the regional cooperation and preparation to the regional conferences on Environmental Protection and Development for the countries of the Asian-Pacific region in 2010 and within the “Environment for Europe” process for the countries of Europe and CIS in 2011.

The Project takes an active part in the preparation of documents for the Conference at the national level. Within the framework of preparation of the documents to the Conference the Expert Group has been also established. It consists of experts of the Consultative Council on Preparation for 6-th Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development in Asia and the Pacific and the 7-th Pan-European Ministerial Conference, Senior Officials of the RK Ministry of Environmental Protection and other state bodies, UNDP, Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia, non-governmental organizations and business-associations.

The UNDP/RK MEP Project provides support and arranges the Expert Group Meeting, where documents for the Conference are discussed. Particularly, possibility of proposal by the Republic of Kazakhstan of the Astana Initiative on integration of the environmental protection process of the Asian and Pacific region and the Pan-European region is under consideration.

UNDP office in Kazakhstan was opened in 1993, soon after the country's accession to the UN. Since then, UNDP has supported implementation of more than 140 projects with a total worth more than USD 61 million.

At the present time activity of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Kazakhstan is determined by the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between UNDP and the RK Government (2010—2014) in the new stage of national development, signed on 25 November 2009. In accordance with this Memorandum, UNDP provides support and supplement of the national efforts undertaken to decide essential issues of economic development and to promote social progress and improvement of the living standards.
