Regional Preparatory Meeting Concludes with Agreements on Key Documents to be Brought forward for Agreement at the Ministerial Conference, 27 September to 2 October 2010, in Astana, Kazakhstan

Muju, Republic of Korea (UN ESCAP Information Services) – Government officials from 23 countries in Asia and the Pacific ended two days of discussions here today, agreeing on three draft regional environment and sustainable development initiatives for endorsement by the Sixth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development in Asia and the Pacific (MCED-6) to be held from 27 September to 2 October 2010 in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The 8-9 July 2010 Regional Preparatory Meeting for the (MCED-6), organized by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), reviewed the draft Regional Implementation Plan for Asia and the Pacific, the draft Ministerial Declaration and the draft Astana “Green Bridge” Initiative to be brought forward for endorsement at MCED-6. »»»

The Head of the State: Kazakhstan suggests creating new environmental declaration — «Green Bridge» between Europe and Asia

Kazakhstan suggests creating new environmental declaration — «Green Bridge» between Europe and Asia. The President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, declared this statement on Thursday during the III Astana Economic Forum.

«The recent disaster in the Gulf of Mexico is a warning of those sad consequences, which await us if in a pursuit of economic growth we ignore ecology and climate issues. The world requires new environmentally safe technologies and their fast exchange, and wider use of renewable sources of energy», — Nursultan Nazarbayev noted.

In this regard, the Head of the State articulated that during one of the recently conducted United Nations’ summits Kazakhstan initiated creating new environmental declaration, the so-called “Green Bridge” between Europe and Asia. »»»

The Sixth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development was presented during the Kazakhstan International Congress “Astana Minerals & Metallurgy-2010”

The Kazakhstan International Congress on mineral resources and metallurgy “Astana Minerals & Metallurgy-2010” finished its work in Astana.

The President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, and the Minister of industry and new technologies, Aset Isekeshev, took part in Congress work. The representatives of Government of the Russian Federation, special group on mining industry and metallurgy (APEC Mining Task Force) within the framework of Asian-Pacific economic cooperation (АPEC), the largest mining and metallurgical holdings and companies — ENRC Plc, Shen Pujing Steel Group (China), Caiani&Company (Australia), Ivanhoe Mines (Canada), Hamriyah Steel (United Arab Emirates), Associations of manufacturers of iron and steel (Turkey) and others were invited to give speeches at the Forum. »»»

Nurgali Ashimov: «Еconomic growth, social development and environmental protection»

The Republic of Kazakhstan will host the Conference Astana-2010 — one of the biggest events of regional importance to strengthen the capability, build partnerships and follow-up of regional processes and programs in the field of environmental protection and development.

In an effort to strengthen domestic competence and implementing the  Kazakh national program Zhasyl Damu (Green Development). The Republic of Kazakhstan introduced the «Green Bridge Initiative» (Astana Initiative), promoting the Eurasian integration for «Green growth», which will be presented at the Conference Astana-2010.

The Minister of Environmental Protection Nurgali Ashimov is telling about the Conference’s main message, expected results and uniqueness of the Astana Initiative undertaken by the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan. »»»

Participation of civil society in preparation for MCED-6

On 12-13 June 2010 in Almaty, the Coordinating Council of NGOs Ecoforum of the Republic of Kazakhstan, with the support of the OSCE Centre in Astana, is planning to hold the next meeting of NGOs Ecoforum of the Republic of Kazakhstan – “Ecoforum 2010”.

The meeting will open on June 12th at 9:00 AM in Almaty at the following address: Dzhandosova 204-A, hotel-resort «Altyn Kargaly».

The delegation of the Republic of Kazakhstan conducted a side event on Astana Initiative and preparation for MCED-6 alongside the 66th Commission Session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), 13-19 May 2010, Incheon, Republic of Korea.

Summary of the second Advisory Council meeting in preparation to the Ministerial Conferences Astana-2010 and Astana-2011.

1.   The second meeting of the Advisory Council (AC) for the preparation and holding of the Ministerial Conferences Astana-2010 and Astana-2011, representatives of civil society, business sector, government agencies, diplomatic missions, international and regional organizations, the scientific community and the media have expressed the importance of participation in Conference of Ministers of the Astana-2010 and the need to support the preparatory process.

2.   The representative of the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Kazakhstan informed the participants about the allocation of responsibility for the preparation and holding of the Sixth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development, according to the following pattern:
