Side Event on MCED6

The delegation of the Republic of Kazakhstan conducted a side event on Astana Initiative and preparation for MCED-6 alongside the 66th Commission Session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), 13-19 May 2010, Incheon, Republic of Korea.

INCHEON, REPUBLIC OF KOREA – On 19th of May 2010 the delegation of the Republic of Kazakhstan conducted a side event on Astana Initiative “Green Bridge – Zhasyl Damu” and preparation and organization of VI Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development in Asia and the Pacific (MCED-6) to be held in Astana from 27 September to 2 October 2010. The goal of the side event was to present the thematic scope of MCED-6 and to invite partners to interact, develop and jointly implement the initiative of the Republic of Kazakhstan “Green Bridge” (Astana Initiative) between Asia, Europe and the Pacific regions.

Among the 58 participants of the side event there were the delegates from about 13 countries: Republic of Korea, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, China, Iran, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Fiji, Republic of Maldives, Thailand and Australia. The event took place at the Songdo ConventiA Convention Centre in Incheon Metropolitan City – the same building where the 66th Commission Session was organized.

The goal of the side event was to present the thematic scope of MCED-6 and to invite partners to interact, develop and jointly implement the initiative of the Republic of Kazakhstan “Green Bridge” (Astana Initiative) between Asia, Europe and the Pacific regions.

The presentations made by the delegation of the Republic of Kazakhstan were covering Astana Initiative – “Green Bridge – Zhasyl Damu” and preparation for MCED-6. The presentations were made by H.E. Mr. Anatoly Dernovoy, Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Environment Protection, as well as Mr. Talaybek Makeyev, Executive Director of the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (CAREC) and Ms. Dina Nassyrova, PR Specialist, CAREC Information and Capacity Building Program.

The Green Bridge initiative was put forward by the Republic of Kazakhstan in an effort to contribute to the integration and cooperation toward 2012 Rio+20 and to promote the dialogue platform for the green integration between Asia, Europe and the Pacific regions.

The partners are also invited to further interact and comment on the Green Bridge idea and scope at www.mced6.org before the MCED6 and during the main and side events of the MCED6 in Astana on September 27 – October 2, 2010.
